Securing a funding mix is crucial to the survival of the arts and organisations of all sizes now recognise that investing resources into this area is the only way to ensure sustainability. However, there is an insufficient number of skilled professional arts fundraisers in Wales. A&B Cymru believes that the only way to increase this vital pool of professionals in the long term, is to establish arts fundraising as a viable and attractive career path.
Through its Creative Internships Programme, A&B Cymru has been striving to achieve this ambition in a tangible and effective way for the past 5 years. The innovative scheme is made possible thanks to crucial funding support from Colwinston Charitable Trust, Garfield Weston Foundation and the Arts Council of Wales Lottery.
The programme places recent graduates into arts organisations as trainee fundraisers, providing in-depth training and development and enabling participants to begin their careers in the strongest possible position. It has already proven itself to be a successful way of addressing a very real barrier to the sustainability of many arts organisations. To date, of the 16 graduates who have completed placements, 13 are now professional fundraisers in Wales.
In October 2017, four recent graduates will be placed into arts organisations for 10 months’ intensive fundraising training. John Dawson, an Arts Management graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama has been placed with Cardiff-based Hijinx Theatre, Sioned Young, a Creative Studies graduate from Bangor University has been placed with Pontio in Bangor, Maddie Towell, a Music graduate also from Bangor University has been placed with the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff and Lucy Purrington, a Photographic Arts graduate of the University of South Wales will be spending her 10 month placement at Sherman Theatre in Cardiff.
Having completed her first year internship at Wales Millennium Centre, Eleanor Prescott, a Journalism Graduate from Cardiff University, will now become a Strand 2 intern. She will work on two part-time placements – one with BAFTA Cymru and one with Sinfonia Cymru, both based in Cardiff.

It has been truly rewarding to see how passionate all our interns are about embarking on a career in fundraising. That has always been the ultimate aim of the scheme. The 2017/18 interns are extremely enthusiastic about the next 10 months and I am confident that they will benefit hugely from this unique training experience. But this is just the beginning. If we are to make a tangible difference to the future of the arts, A&B Cymru must ensure the scheme continues in the long term."
