Creative Internships – Crafting a Cultural Workforce

The Creative Internships Programme aims to develop a new generation of arts fundraisers in Wales. Through this unique initiative, A&B Cymru is addressing an urgent need in a tangible, effective way.

The ever decreasing public purse and the resulting need for the arts to diversify income means that the demand for fundraisers is at an all-time high. However, the number of skilled professionals in this field remains incredibly low. A&B Cymru believes that the only way to effectively address this issue in the long term is to establish arts fundraising as a viable and attractive career path.

Entering a career in arts management is challenging for recent graduates as many organisations have insufficient resources to support their development.  The programme provides in-depth and intense training, enabling participants to begin their careers in the strongest possible position.  Each intern is placed into an arts organisation for 10 months as a full-time, paid, trainee fundraiser and receives:

  • structured support from the host organisation, including mentoring from a senior fundraiser
  • mentoring from a specially selected business adviser
  • ongoing support from A&B Cymru
  • invitations to attend regular A&B Cymru skills development courses, free of charge
  • invitations to attend A&B Cymru networking events, free of charge
  • hands on events management experience by helping to deliver A&B Cymru events.

Each year, A&B Cymru invites its arts members to register interest in becoming a host organisation.  At the same time, recruitment drives are undertaken at each of the programme’s partner universities* across Wales to market the scheme to students due to graduate.  All applicants are taken through a professional recruitment process and successful interns undertake a programme of training delivered by the staff of A&B Cymru.  The placements then begin in October.

Now in its 6th year, the programme has established a well-earned reputation for best practice, positioning A&B Cymru as a leader in its field.
Of the 20 graduates who have successfully completed placements, 17 are now professional fundraisers.  In short, a new generation of skilled fundraisers is beginning to emerge in Wales – individuals with genuine drive and passion matched by invaluable training and impressive experience.
