Art @ the Senedd is back!

The long awaited return of Art @ the Senedd is taking place on the evening of Wednesday 13 March 2019.

This unique initiative is a partnership between Arts & Business (A&B) Cymru and the Welsh Government’s Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport. It brings high-quality live performance to the public areas of the Assembly building, thanks to business sponsorship, placing the arts at the heart of government and celebrating the true diversity of talent that exists in such abundance across Wales.

Art @ the Senedd brings together all who benefit from A&B Cymru’s work. The audience of 100 guests will include business leaders, senior figures in the arts world, Assembly Members and staff and other key opinion formers.

The event, sponsored by Valero, will feature an excerpt from Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s Nyrsys by Bethan Marlow, with songs by Rhys Taylor and Bethan Marlow, based on an original idea by Sara Lloyd and Bethan Marlow. This exciting piece, directed by Sara Lloyd and produced by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru in association with Pontio, celebrates all that is good in Welsh theatre: new writing by a Welsh female writer and director; a true life portrayal of the health sector in Wales; a stage for the voices of Welsh nurses; and a celebration of the NHS in song by an emerging Welsh composer. With script and songs created from interviews with cancer nurses working today in the Welsh NHS, this highly acclaimed play, shines a light on the dedication of these real-life heroes -— the challenges they face and the mischief, sisterhood and sense of vocation that sustains them.

A&B Cymru’s Chief Executive, Rachel Jones, said “I am delighted to bring Art @ the Senedd back to Cardiff Bay, thanks to our valuable partnership with Lord Elis-Thomas and the staunch support of our business partner Valero.  This exciting initiative was first staged in 2000 as Art @ the Assembly and this event marks its 76th performance.  It illustrates perfectly all that A&B Cymru stands for – the vision of business, the creativity of the arts and the pride we all have in our vibrant nation. It is particularly exciting to bring an excerpt from Nyrsys to the Senedd and, thanks to Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s innovative Sibrwd app, non-Welsh speakers too can enjoy this brilliant Welsh language piece”.

Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Lord Elis-Thomas, said: “A&B Cymru undertakes a distinctive role in bringing these two sectors together to work and learn from each other for mutual benefit and the revival of Art @ the Senedd is to be celebrated.  This is an excellent opportunity to experience some of the best work that the Welsh arts sector has to offer in magnificent surroundings of the Senedd.”

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s Artistic Director, Arwel Gruffydd, said “We are honoured to feature this performance of Nyrsys as part of the Art @ the Senedd series, following a successful national tour of the full production to venues across Wales in November and December 2018. The production has already reached 3,837 attenders and a further 1,506 participants. It was toured as part of a wider cultural celebration of the National Health Service during its 70th year and gave us an opportunity to place centre stage a range of issues that affect each and every one of us in one way or another. It was also an opportunity to celebrate female theatre-makers in the year marking the centenary of British women’s victory to secure the right to vote.”

Art @ the Senedd takes place from 6.00pm – 8.00pm.
